i had the best time last night in aspen. after dinner at pacifica (venison, beet salad, clam chowder...yum) we headed over to the belly up to see deadmau5 (deadmouse) who started at 11:30. so much fun! the music was pounding, the lights going crazy, the 'kids' in their tutus and glow sticks and us....drinking from our magnum (sometimes getting old is not a drag!)

it was a beautiful wednesday and i decided i needed to sketch. it had been a while since i had and so i headed up the frying pan road and up to the reudi reservoir. i love the view, water and horizon. so, with snow around, music playing in the car i decided to sketch....... a pretty, calming day and a not so great sketch :)

ok, so, i love to hike, walk & now run. since living here i've managed to pick up the tools of the trade so i'm dressed appropriately and that i've got proper gear to eliminate accidents. SO, i indulge in some hiking boots (who knew ugly shoes were expensive....this breaks my heart) from italy (well some things can't be changed) and head out the next day.

chris has been in town for a month helping me with the stores and, well, generally just getting ourselves in trouble. she is the queen of research so decides we must walk on the rio grande. it's beautiful. the skies are blue, snow all around, colors of nature surround you.

i'm feeling good, my feet are warm and ankles supported. however, after about 5 miles, we're almost back to the car and i notice the top of my right foot hurts. hmmmm, i say aloud, 'maybe i tied my shoes too tight'.
yes, in fact i did & that, my friends, can give you a compressed nerves which is quite painful.

are you done laughing? yes, i, a former (and not so former) tomboy, grew up playing sports and have had my share of broken bones, crazy accidents (read the post about my eye being knocked out of my socket), broken noses (refer to eye socket), deviated septum (softball, basketball & a chick fight at an x concert that i happened to walk through). i am not afraid of a lil spill, but people how can it be that my first injury in aspen is because i tied my shoes too tight??????? this is unforgivable!

meanwhile, 3 days later all was well and i'm no longer hating my ugly boots. so here are some beautiful pictures of that fateful ridiculous day.

i WISH so badly i had my camera out when lil jack got about 6" from a cow trying to figure out what it was. but, when the cow moved....OMG i haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

i am so excited to be living in this winter wonderland! it's absolutely beautiful....in fact, magical. blankets of white, sparkling in the sun, blue skies, fresh air & an overwhelming designer to be outside. i am happy here.

winter school happens once a year in downtown aspen. i loved these snow sculptures and had to take blurry pics from my blackberry on my way home while fireworks were going out. love it.

holy smokes! i got to see one of my all time favorite bands at the belly up in aspen last week with one of my fave friends, chris. she's in town for a month to help me out at the store and have a blast.

here are some images of the band that has been a huge part of my life. also, when i graduated from the academy of art in san francisco i used their song 'ocean size' from the nothing shocking album as the music for my fashion show.

the only bummer.........tix said show starts at 10 and so i, stupidly, thought there would be an opening band (duh???) AND there wasn't! so we missed the first 30 min. i literally screamed 'NO' when i saw them on stage. i missed (or i'm hoping i didn't) my 2 fave songs but still, amazing amazing amazing!

and people, i hope my abs look that good at 53!!

Ask Suzi: What to Wear for New Year's Eve

A couple of months ago, we interviewed Suzi about her favorite pieces in the fall 2011 collection. Now we're back again, bugging her with our perennial questions about what to wear.

New Year's Eve is always very hyped, but not everyone has a big date or a fancy party to attend. We wanted Suzi's advice for what to wear to make the night stylish and special, no matter how cozy and casual you end up getting. As usual, she had plenty of answers:

Suzi, you just moved to Colorado. What would you wear for a New Year's Eve celebrated on a snowy mountain, after a big day on the slopes? {We're thinking roaring fire, mugs of mulled wine, and maybe a game of scrabble...}
I would be playing uno instead of scrabble or and drinking lots and lots of wine! I would be wearing souchi cashmere leggings, enza costa tunic layer tank, souchi scarlet cowl & super warm thick socks AND a bobble beret. Then, I'm layered in cashmere and if the night turns into morning (due to uno & not the wine) then i'm in the comfiest of pj's.

Let's say you actually do have a hot date/ big party to go to? What would you wear to sparkle?
I love cut 25, especially the dress pictured below. It's so sexy, fun, and ridiculously comfortable. I am also a huge fan of wearing something sexy & casual (don't look you're trying too hard) & some great shoes. I think the souchi eva ruche dress with a leather jacket or shearling is perfect!

Lots of people travel over the holidays. On New Year's, some people are returning from a holiday adventure, while others are just getting ready to go after a couple of crazy, food and wine and gift filled weeks. Is it possible to look good while traveling? What would you wear for a New Year's Eve spent in the friendly skies?

It all depends on the length of the flight.....
If it is short & and I'm getting off the plane and heading straight to a party, I'd wear the souchi lara cashmere catsuit with a johnny farah belt & the souchi trina cardi cape! It's cozy, comfy & uber sexy. What is better than a cashmere onesie that hugs your curves? It might not be perfect for a long flight though: It's too hard to pee in a airplane bathroom! So, if I'm on a long flight then i'd go with the corey lynn calter black lace mini, tights, booties & the souchi alek crew.

Everyone I know just had a baby or is all tired out from the holiday madness. Instead of going out, people want to stay in. I have a friend hosting a casual but festive dinner party. What can I wear that is celebratory but not too over the top?
How about genetic denim skinnies & the claudia cowl off the shoulder & a souchi bobble beret (who has time to do their hair as a mom or with holiday madness?) AND I'd throw on a great piece of jewelry from thea grant.

so this month italian vogue had an editorial spread called 'body by kloss'. it featured the model, karlie kloss in various poses dressed and undressed. frenzy occurred and words like: anorexic, unhealthy, too skinny, etc hit the internet and fueled the controversy.

after 25 years in the fashion industry i don't get it. i thought the pictures were great and inspired fitness & health. clearly miss kloss works out, is athletic, strong & fit. how could her body equate to anorexia? it doesn't make sense. is she thin? yes. does she have a low fat count? yes. but, you can't have that kind of muscle tone and be starving yourself, right?

i am happy to see a naturally tall, thin & lanky girl work out. so many models are too thin these days and lack any kind of muscle tone. karlie's images show a strength that i really like....though the abs may be a bit much for me. however, i wouldn't mind that ass & thighs!

christmas day in aspen.........................

my first christmas in aspen...........thoughts of a white christmas, fireplace, yummy food, warm cocktails with friends after a long day of skiing......well, not quite. but, i did get all of these things this week but not in one day :)

i woke up this morning to a a very excited puppy who could barely contain his excitement for the chuck-it and tennis ball, 3 new treats (thank you christine & lola & me), 2 new toys (new rubber ball & a red/green/white stuff squeaky octopus). so we headed out for 30 minutes of chuck-it. i can't even imagine the energy necessary to sprint for 30 straight minutes.

then, it was a yummy breakfast for jack while i went to the gym (i miss the warmth of exercising outside). then i went to meet anita & have breakfast at the two rivers cafe. yes, it was very healthy: scrambled eggs, potatoes, bacon & cheddar biscuits (oh lord!) and several cups of tea.

headed back to basalt store to pick up more souchi as the aspen store has been selling out of things. i then went home to shower & get ready for a day at the store. word on the aspen streets is that people love to shop on christmas day.

we arrive in aspen, sun is shining there is still snow in the park but not on the streets. so jack gets another 30 minutes of chuck-it and is now exhausted.

so here i sit. it's true, there are some shoppers out. jack is playing with his new toys and chowing down on his bully stick. i marked down the little that is left from fall collections and updating the website. not the best christmas day, but not the worst. missing my old friends & family but such is life with opening a new store in a resort town. meanwhile, the customers are lovely, fun & giving lots of holiday wishes.

i'm closing up early to go to a dinner party tonight in missouri heights (beautiful beautiful views) with 20 people. it will be fun, crazy and hysterical so all is well for me and lil jack in aspen. strange i live here now. even stranger that i love it & can't believe it's been 7 1/2 months. strange where life takes us.

*ooooh and this friday i get to see jane's addiction at belly up! i am soooooo excited. my love for perry is almost as strong as my love for johnny :)

december 15 souchi aspen officially opened with a party! i don't know very many people in aspen so i was nervous & flashbacks of birthday parties from elementary school and fear nobody would show up. so funny, as our parties growing up were so big but still nerves kick in.

so, how happy was i to run out of glasses & see everyone having a great time! the day started with a crazy busy morning and people shopping up a storm so the store was a disaster zone. then mid day i get the most beautiful flowers from a new friend that may be the most beautiful flowers i ever received with an amazing card as well. side note: i WISH i wrote good cards!

and yummy yummy sweets from franck thirion pastry & cafe (same peeps who made my delicious birthday cake!) so pretty and so delicous

we've been open for a month AND we (me & my gift wrapping talents) made the cover of the gift guide for the aspen daily times! i love how little i look behind these packages!! i've been in pom pom heaven with cashmere, hemp, bamboo, silk & organic cotton. one of my favorite things is to gift wrap packages so this was such a surprise to be asked to show off my wrapping. thank you to ross & emily at the news.

also, i met & bonded with giovanna, fashion writer for the aspen daily news. she was hysterical & we bonded over early 90's fashion: ann demeulemeester, jil sander, dolce & gabbana suits, lord!! so much fun & decided we needed to continue the conversation with some cocktails next week. thank you to giovanna for the nice mention in the fashion section.

ok, i don't ever remember writing a christmas wish list. sure, my mom asked us, but if you knew my mom, you'd realize she buys all year so really, it's besides the point. but, maybe i did when i was really young but i have no memories of writing for specific gifts.

however, this year, everyone seems to have a list on every blog and article or editorial so i figured, what the hell....i would do a ridiculous list. now, be clear, i am not expecting any of these let alone the list. but, it was sort of fun.

ok, i used to see these types of things at 2 homes in portland, or. they were about 2 blocks from my home. i used to check them out in peoples front yards while i was walking billy. then, suddenly, i'm hiking in basalt mountain yesterday and suddenly in the midst of tons of rocks there was a stretch of maybe 30 feet where all of these were spread out.

i love that you almost don't notice them. yet, somehow they stand out and you suddenly notice them.

who knows about these? i have no idea the purpose....maybe just a little more beauty in the world?

so, these boots and i have gone way back....2001 to be exact. we fell in love at the barney's in los angeles. i had just left san francisco for la and decided i needed a new pair of shoes. it was love at first sight. however, i debated for days if i should return them and get the black or brown pair. but, no, the shammy color won out over and over. i bust them out ever year or so and still love them just as much as the day i got them.

yesterday i wore them in basalt & i got over 17 compliments from both strangers and friends. here's the thing about these magic boots. no matter what city, what outfit, what gender, what ethnicity these boots are the most complimented shoes i've ever owned.

after almost 11 years i can say they are one of my favorites. they make me just as happy as the first time i tried them on. what do you think? thumbs up or thumbs down?

i have been in basalt for almost 6 months! i am shocked how quickly it's gone by. i'm surprised that my life here has been fun, easy & so full of adventure & happiness. it's funny when you make a decision to try something new, unknown & seemingly crazy and it turns out to be a wonderful decision.

there is something freeing about leaving behind what wasn't working or no longer inspiring and head for something unknown. for the first time in a long time i feel fearless. i am so excited about souchi (wait till you see spring 2012), the new basalt store & now, my new aspen store (opening next week). i am already looking at a 4th location! where do you think the next one should be? will be?

my oldest friends were not shocked by my decision to up and try something new. my new friends were surprised as there was no discussion or conversations about aspen or basalt but there was talk of new york, san francisco & fantasies of moving to europe. but, nope, never colorado!

fearless is a wonderful state of mind. it feels good in head, heart & body. i am excited to see what happens in the future with souchi & me with this new state of mind.

The last time we did an interview with Suzi it was March and she was headed to Paris. A lot has changed since then: A move, a new souchi store, a new sidekick named Jack. Isn't it time we caught up?

We already know about her favorite pieces in the 2011 fall collection. Still, we want more -- we always want more.

souchi now has two stores: the flagship souchi in Portland and souchi basalt. How are they different -- and what's this rumor about a third location?
the rumor is true! souchi aspen opens nov 5!!
all souchi stores will have similar collections and brands that cater to the city the stores are in: pdx has a more urban casual vibe, souchi basalt has is casual and outdoorsy. aspen will be loaded with luxury: cashmere, one of a kinds, gold, diamonds & hard to find specialty lines. aspen will also have a rack of one of a kind knits that are labeled and marked so that you know they are limited edition.

I imagine Portland and Basalt are pretty different (rain vs. snow, city vs. mountain lifestyle). What are your current favorite travel pieces -- the ones that work anytime, anywhere?
i have so many great travel pieces. right now I love the lil madame butterfly & a pair of skinny genetics & johnny farah belt & bag (not matching!!)

How has Colorado inspired your design aesthetic?
personally, i am more active than i've ever been, so it's fun to push the fit & snug look of souchi. i am outdoors all the time & running between both stores, going to yoga, and playing with jack. once winter hits i'll be skiing! it's challenging and so much fun to get dressed every day.

i now live in the most beautiful place. i am constantly surrounded by luxury: amazing homes, art, and natural beauty. i am enjoying designing things that cater to people who enjoy the very best.

I'm cleaning out my closet and getting ready to purchase some new things. What the must-haves for the autumn season?
a textured fitted crew neck sweater (see the daria crew from souchi), a long skirt or dress (see bruce ruffle dress), cool coat (see sonia by sonia rykiel), a striking piece of jewelry (see thea grant howard necklace or the embers lane necklace AND something cozy that you will live in by wearing casual or sexy (see all things souchi)
AND an amazing pair of shoes that need to be textured or color....NOTHING BORING HERE.

delicious food, new friends, great music and a medley of cocktails, wines & bubbles.....impossible not to be a good time. our host, david, decided to throw a dinner party for 'the general' who was visiting from cambodia and show him some mountain fun. so, the crew was invited and asked to bring nothing but smiles and a good time.

so, the girls dressed to impress: souchi, missoni, thea grants, sassy shoes & red lips. we were cute :) i, felt like it was 1988 and decided to chanel a lycra dress (the malina at souchi.com), philip lim leopard booties & thea grant bow tie necklace & black smokey eye! yep, 1988 with WAY better hair!! the boys brought skills at bartending (margarita's, tequilla shots, martini's....ugh, it hurts to just type all of that!) and the host made an incredible cajun feast! yep, shrimp & crab were flown in from new orleans and the sauces he took 2 days preparing: remoulade was devine! it was indulgent and delicious and ending with pear tarts! yum yum yum

more time in LA meant: a souchi trunk show at a private home, an afternoon with my friend whitney & a short trip with becky to the flower mart where i am on overload with all the colors and shapes.

for the trunk show: i met julie & jamie in basalt, colorado over the summer. my friend, karl, invited (well forced) them to come check out my store. they obliged with both husbands and 5 kids under the age of 6! so much fun and shows what good friends they are. i was a bit nervous as jack was still a puppy and not quite sure how he'd handle all the kids. the kids & jack were perfect and at the end of a 2 hour shopping session he was asleep in a dressing room with the 2 youngest kids. LOVE.

lucky for me, both jamie & julie liked souchi & decided i should come to LA & do a show at their home for their friends. it sounded like fun & why not? it was so much fun that we decided we had to do it again.

lunch with whitney was fantastic! though, surprising from our old days in venice beach, there was no pinot grigio as future mama whit surprised me being 8 1/2 months pregnant!! i went to there new home and fell in love with the style and the pretty plants outdoors. i love the simplicity in the landscaping and the super cool stuff inside. i should have taken pictures of her custom wood doors from mexico, loved them. i loved the lil picket fence protecting the pups and MORE than anything fell in love with the wallpaper in their bathroom. yep, i stole it and am putting it in the souchi aspen dressing rooms. love.

la in mid october for me meant: private trunk show at a home in, market week (new lines for aspen!), meeting with the press office and lots of food, wine, bubbly & catching up. i was surprised to find out how many people were surprised by my decision to up and move to the mountains. then, sweet becky says, 'what that's totally suzi'. so perhaps i do get up and go but that's fun isn't it? granted, i knew not a soul in colorado except for sweet jack who i had for 3 days. what an adventure it's become.

i had an incredible 42nd birthday! my new friends in basalt, made it extra special and made me realize how lucky i am to have made the decision to move here. i have made wonderful friends that make me laugh non stop and love to cook & drink....see the grins!

my host, molly, made an incredible thai dinner (yum!!) and asked all the guests to bring wine and thai beer. so i decided to bring champagne as a thank you to all of them for welcoming me into their family. however, to my surprise, they all knew i'd want champagne so 15 bottles were in the fridge!! oh, come friday, i was feeling more like 52. ouch!

here are pics of the night....but after the party...no pics as that many bubbles becomes a bit foggy and no documentation is necessary.

i love my sweet friend whitney! we met almost 8 years ago when i first moved to portland. we quickly became two dear friends who rarely saw each other due to our busy lives. yet, as with many of my nearest & dearest, every time we are together it's like we just saw each other the day before. well, except for all the chaos of our lives in between. it often means, lots of wine, bubbles & chatter!

both of our lives have taken quite a turn in 2011 and both of us have moved to new cities, new lives and new adventures. it was so much fun to spend some time in new york (her new home) and shop, eat, drink and laugh our asses off. ok, there were tears but impossible not to shed at ground zero.

it was a beautiful time together & i can't wait to visit again soon. here is to an incredible new beginning filled with love, laughter and unexpected joys.

meanwhile, please note, the pics of whitneys apt are taken 3 days after she moved to ny. um, me, well, i've been in basalt 5 months and yep, my place doesn't look like this! did you see the labeled containers? the pics & art on the wall? yep, she has made herself at home. me, well i'm still learning how to do that.

first off......how is it late september? the leaves are starting to change, nights have gotten cooler, layers are starting and jack is so big. last week i was in ny for fashion week. i was showing my spring 2012 collection and looking at the collections of new designers and the ones we currently carry at the souchi stores. plus, lots and lots of catching up with old friends, new friends & lots of food & wine.

finally, finally the cold weather is starting to move in. yes, i realize in about 6-8 wks i'm going to be complaining about how cold it is (or maybe not!) but i am so excited to start wearing my new souchi fall sweaters, new boots that i have been in ny a mere 20 hrs and already hit up a shop and walked away with below! i am headed to barneys tonight for a few more pops of luxe to work back to my sweaters & new life in aspen.

i was, as most are these days, wanting some pops of color to play with my neutrals & to mix back to the azure blue. i'm feeling the azure with these green jeans & some maybe a french's bottega wrap. love it.

on my list to find today is some of the following:

-a beautiful print dress to wear with all my souchi knits (especially the caitlin) & vintage ysl booties
-fun socks to wear with open toe heels
-insanely impractical shoes that will make me happy to put on for years to come
-a watch (ok, this quest has gone on for 12+ years......leaning towards one.....maybe today is the day?)
-a shearling coat (ok, this quest has gone on for only 7+ years)
-an amazing accessory that i'll want to wear with everything. (the watch i'm leaning towards could actually count here too.....)
-mid calf length skirt to wear with the daria crew & mel raglan

see hardly greedy at all. i already crossed off a new hat because i took 3 from souchi & 1 new rag & bone hat) & short boots (moto from gucci) and tall boots (scored a knee high hand stained charcoal pair with shearling inside) so i'm good to go.

happy birthday to one of salon tulio's finest, miss kelly & basalts very own dina. the girls birthdays were a few days apart so they decided to have a bunch of people meet up at campo in aspen and then head to escobar for dancing. yes, friends, i accepted the invitation, despite the plans to dance! but, these girls are great and it's their birthday so i sucked it up, dug out my dancing shoes, dusted them off and drove up to aspen.

it was fun, crazy, a tad sloppy at times (as most crazy parties can be) and hysterical too. i had a great time and here are some pics of the nights festivities.

ok, so those of you who know me KNOW i am a fall girl! i want to be layered in knits, bundled up in a fabulous coat (swoon for the bruce coat...see my next post), strutting in gorgeous boots & adorned with a souchi hat (zeus!!!) and maybe one great accessory (thea? winifred? ahhhhhhhh)....

my days of being a beach girl (yes, there was a time that i was super tan with help from QT, aluminum foil & baby oil, and afternoons spent at the pool, beach or backyard) but the days of that have passed me by. yes, since probably 1990 i don't lay out. i am thankful for the city of san francisco for providing cold summers and a freezing beach that kept me away. my skin thanks you for only 2 sun spots.

now, don't get me wrong i LOVE a tropical vacation spent lounging seaside in a bikini, with a great book (or kindle), a cocktail and sound of waves crashing....but 5-10 days in the sun is wonderful & relaxing.

but, i want cold for my everyday life. i want to have a pink nose & cheeks and i want the layers. so here are my must have sweaters from my own collection. yes, i'd love to have it all and in many cases, i do get quite a bit (an advantage of very very long days) but these are the ones i must have this fall:

i decided to go to the aspen community luncheon for business owners, etc to discuss what will be going on this ski season. i brought my kid sister (ok not really, but feels like it) monica. most of the reason we went is it gave us a reason to go up aspen mountain in a gondala and have lunch on top of the mountain to check out the view. it was a beautiful day, beautiful view, and instead of a basket of bread on the table there were 2 baskets of truffle parmesan fries....hmmmm, not ok!

well we woke up to a gorgeous morning. sun shining bright, a slight breeze in the air & sweet jack ready to play. i decided to make him a delicious breakfast of brown rice, carrots, sweet potato & fish (this is part of his food already). and i headed to yoga to stretch, work out & do head stands (not so well today thanks to allergies) so i decide to help linda who hasn't done one.....word to the wise....leave this to the professionals because i got kicked in the side of my head...OUCH!!!

then midland for breakfast, then energy work appt (this is new but i was very curious about it), grocery store, bathe jack (as he played at the energy workers backyard and found a mud pit (yep!!! i now have a brown lab), then up to buttermilk mountain for drinks and a tour of truly the most beautiful home i've ever seen let alone been in. so stunning & every corner so well thought out & the furnishings were meant for this home. incredible! next time i'll ask my friend if she'd mind me taking photos.

then we were off to aspen for dinner & drinks at elina: sashimi ahi tuni with cucumbers, bruschetta with poached egg and artichoke, halibut ceviche and lemon basil martinis.....delicious! then back down valley for a night cap at tempranillo with out friend david. who by the way gets passed a note from a man down the bar who has asked us about his love life & would be age appropriate women for him. it's sad as he's sad about his divorce but still kind of odd. what's more odd? well the note, read after he left, is him asking our friend for a 5 million loan??????? huh? very odd indeed.

we decide we're all meeting up on wednesday and are trying to decide what to do. i vote sky diving, linda votes horseback riding....we'll see.

basalt sunday, august 14......food network party......

i was invited to a party at the new viceroy hotel in old snowmass. the view is fantastic and above the pool are the chair lifts leading you to the mountain. the party was for, 'the next food network star finalist susie jimenez'. she is a celebrity chef in aspen & is hysterical & so much fun. she was the one of the final 2 contestants so she threw a party, invited tons of people, cool cover band & while eating & drinking we watched the final episode to see if she becomes 'the next food network star'.

sadly, she didn't win but, hell, she came in second and is so camera friendly that i'm sure a show is around the corner. congratulations to susie for being so cool that she threw a party for coming in second! love that.

meanwhile, the invites said cocktail attire & here is what i spied. now, meanwhile, i was thinking about not going because i found out that morning that my 'insect bites' were not bites, but in fact some version of a poison plant allergic reaction so my legs were beyond hideous. so i opted for the new sea wool (oh lord, but it is cold in the mtns) overalls, thea grant charm necklace & a souchi sheer organic tee & fendi heels with a souchi beret. j'taime paris!

however, with the looks of the evening (ok, these aren't my favorite) but more discussing that wow, the question isn't how low can you go, but more how high can you go and how tight???? ladies, this is not meant to be mean, but more informative. imagination is the art of sexy & sultry & tight does not make you look skinnier.

mostly my disappoint in this younger crowd were the shoes. granted, admittedly i am a HUGE shoe snob, but i could not always splurge on expensive shoes & STILL i can't have all the shoes i want so i have to choose carefully. ladies, young & old, invest in a great heel, boot & flat sandal. that's it. these 3 will get you through.

about 10 days ago, the souchi basalt girls (ok, melisa & i) decided we needed to have drinks at the new pub in town, 'the brick pony' with the basalt salon tulio girls.....so, cashmere, cocktails (tons of vodka concoctions!) sweet potato fries, pizza, calamari & sunglasses were needed. and not to mention talk of boys, boobs, waxing & scissors!!

OUT WITH THE GIRLS after the souchi party. we decided to go to the bent brick which was delicious. bent brick is at 17th & nw marshall is the second restaurant for scott dolich who is also owner and chef of park kitchen. his food is incredible & the atmosphere is fun & did i say the food was delicious?? yes, it is!

truly, my sweet jack must be the best car dog ever! at the end of july i had to go back to portland for our store party & to shoot the spring 2012 collection. i decided to drive so i could bring my baby jack. it's an 18 hour drive through colorado, idaho & utah. we had the best time and got very lucky with the weather.

the amazing thing about jack is he sleeps for the first 4 1/2 hrs and then does a slight whimper and mini bark so we pull off the freeway for him to go to the bathroom, have dinner & then boom he's back to napping, looking out the window for another 5 1/2 hours with a few minutes every hour of intermittent playing with his toys.

he is the best co-pilot. check out his posture while looking out the window. or is it cuter his snuggling with his 'stuffie' (a stuffed puppy).

i had the best time 4th of july weekend. started out with rose & dinner at tempranillo with friends, an awesome hike, difficult yoga class, playing with jack, slammed at the store and all while it's in the mid 80's. beautiful.

for being in basalt only 6 weeks i have been very lucky to meet & make some cool new friends who have invited me into their lives. i feel fortunate & thankful for this adventure.

so, i was invited to a bbq by my new friends at our friend davids house in the 'frying pan'. it's such a cool house with the most beautiful view, barn, guest house (?). i never made it inside but can only imagine it's as cool on the inside. love it. the food (amazing & in the oc this would not be described as bbq but instead delicious!), drinks (all imaginable concoctions), fireworks, music (this was funny & ended up being great, thanks paula for some lita ford), sleeping under the stars (maybe next year as i had to get home to sweet jack) and yummy desserts. oh, AND, then later as the evening went on, a taco stand with old school al pastor tacos with grilled pineapple, onions and cilantro. YUM. note to self.....run, hike, yoga, cardio as all this food and drink is going to require TONS of exercise.

basalt........jack at 14 1/2 weeks............so so so big

jack and i are having the best time in basalt. he has gotten so big and for the most part i'd say he's the most incredible puppy. jack is a lab and i had heard how much energy they have an tend to be hyper and jack is pretty mellow. he has these bursts of energy that are hysterical: spinning in the air, running in circles, jumping up and over things, playing like crazy with his toys, chewing on all things (toys, socks, hems of all my jeans, and EVEN the terracotta flower pots on my deck). i am in love. i for sure thought we'd be happy and be in love but i was also afraid of missing billy too much.

turns out i do miss billy very much and the first few weeks i kept saying billy instead of jack. i wish they could have met & played together. i actually think billy would have liked jack and i think about the 2 of them playing & it always puts a smile on my face.

so here, is sweet jack, a big boy at 14 1/2 weeks on his first hike behind basalt mountain. AND, he got to go off leash. we had so much fun because the it was a game of trust. the trainer said i should let him off a bit at a time and then hide behind things when he got ahead of me and then see him run back look for me. you want to create that looking for me. he got it right away and i was laughing the entire morning.

the other rule, was it was jacks schedule so if in 10 minutes he got tired we'd have to turn around. however, sweet jack, never got tired and we went a full hour and 15 minutes. he then slept an extra 8 hours that day. we're now going twice a week and i can't wait for next summer when we can go on runs on the trails.

i am hoping for a very long life with jack filled with lots of trails, sunshine, rain, mountains & playing.

ok, not the best shots, but this was a great bbq with yummy steak, wine, rum shots & an incredible view, a personal pond and wrap around deck and bacci.
a great day. too bad no jack for this trip. fyi, this is dina, doing her impression of the molly ringwalk dance.

basalt........end of may......beginning of july.......

ok, i have been out of touch a bit but so much has happened! first off, the noticeable difference in town is 'the season has officially begun'. the town is packed, aspen even crazier. from my deck i can see a line of cars & boats heading to reudi. all parking lots are busy, people are shopping and the sun is out and hot! i still feel like i am on vacation. today, i went to look at a bike.....who knew bikes were so expensive? i think i'm going to go for a cruiser with gears....but not sure.

last week i hiked the arbaney kettle trail & it was easier than the time before but still so hard. i took many photos so you can see how steep this trail is. when you start in the parking lot there is no sign of sopris mountain range but as you start to climb you can then see it in all it's glory.

i was on a mission to beat my time from the week before (easy, as my time was pathetic). i was doing pretty well and felt good so i decided to run down. it is fairly steep almost in it's entirety so perhaps not the best idea but it felt so good. luckily, i found out i have good knees but man oh man did my thighs hurt!! but i shaved off an hour so yeah me.

here are some photos of the amazing trail. i must say, the valley, should consider a dipping pool at the top! instead there is a sad lil water bowl for the pups. i can't wait for jack to be able to do this hike. i could use the pull up. it is exhausting and exhilarating. i am in awe of the people who run up it. one day!

basalt....aspen.....food & wine......june 16-19......exhausted

for those of you who don't know, this weekend (ending today) was the big food & wine event in aspen. what is crazy about this weekend is there are TONS of parties at restaurants, bars, galleries & museums. as well as private parties at the hotels, landmarks & incredible private homes. which means, i'm exhausted after a fantastic weekend of multiple trips to aspen, working at the store, jack's puppy classes, back to the store...and wine on the decks & porches of local restaurants.

so, it started thursday night:
an invitation from plum tv to attend a party at the aspen art museum & then paragon with wine tasting, appetizers, swag & art. oh and a bit of..........monica said, 'DEERRRRR!' AND i say, 'NOOOOOO NOOO NOOOOOOOOOO!' and swerve my car to avoid hitting this giant deer (elk size!) thank you volvo for building a solid car that was totally cool with the swerve.

so, that was thursday. on friday, it was scotch tasting at jimmy's that i skipped and sent one of our new souchi girls, melisa & her fiance tyler. grandma needed to rest up. this also means i skipped the men of aspen party. yes, i skipped.

however, last night i was invited to go to the 'wine in the mine' party on smuggler mountain! the view was beautiful, fantastic dj's & did i mention the view. an outdoor brick oven pizza, tons of wine (rose, barbera blend, pinot...tons!) however, i was the designated driver who saw many police pullovers on our way up from aspen. drunk driving is not cool, especially on a mountain road late night. any questions, refer back to the deer up above. after, driving to aspen, we (myself & alison aka 'red') met up with the silver fox & some friends at elevation & then hopped on a shuttle up to smuggler mountain. after a bit of a hike (it's 9pm, cold, windy & thankfully i packed my audry sweater & isabel marant boots) we were met with the wine in the mine sign

and are asked if we want to go up to the party or do a mine tour. we head to the party first and hang around. i run into my friend damon who tells me we have to do the mine tour. however, red & i say....we didn't sign the waiver (we are wild & crazy!) but decide it's ok. red, is more concerned the helmets won't fit. which is hysterical since she's tiny....but apparently has a large head (hmmm, still not sure about that). so we head to the mine entrance and are given hats. mine, i believe is the coolest: black & says 'dyno' on the front! yes, i need to have this hat. the tour is amazing and i think how crazy it must be to be a mine worker & think of the chilean miners. wow, a hard job. but so beautiful inside. we see the fault lines, the huge, hand dug, and dragged out 2200 lb piece that was removed (still the largest ever) and i'm in awe.

it was incredible. damp, cold, dark & dripping (not sure i liked that and kept wondering about bats) but i had a great time getting into character.

so, after the tour i decided i had to have the helmet so continued to wear it. until, this mean girl told me i had to give it back. she took it from me and put it back in the mine. NO!! i needed to have it. so i see a cart near me that has a bunch but none as cool as black dyno. so, a miner comes out & asks me what i'm looking for & i tell him. he says, well i'm not sure you can take those. and i say, 'can't like i'll be arrested?' he says no. 'can't like a miner won't have a helmet tomorrow' and he says no. he says why do you want it. i said, it said dyno and i never want to dress up for halloween but NOW i can forever be a miner. he says take one. i am ecstatic but say i don't see mine because she took it inside. he grins, shrugs and says, hold on. he comes back looking sad saying, 'i couldn't fine black dyno.' so i thank him and say, it's ok...just not meant to be. he says, well come with me and see if you find it. i walk in and see it right away & he laughs he must be blind. he says he'll walk out with it for me but not sure how i would get it out of there but wished me luck.

KIDS, I GOT IT! I HAVE IT! I LOVE IT!

there was a bit of a lie & conception but man, aren't i glowing? i mean perhaps i drew some attention being at a party at midnight in stiletto boots knocked up.

such is a night at food & wine.

i love love love caitlin ducey's sculptures. for those of you lucky enough to see some of them in person this past spring at souchi, i'm sure you can understand why. i had to have the multi-color rubber bands piece. but, i am coveting the straw pieces.

then, she sent me images of these & i was blown away!! love love love them. each made of many plastic colorful straws in a free-form unframed sculpture. perfection.

basalt block party part 2......................

ok, so after i left work for my 3 hour break on saturday, i headed to riverside cafe to meet dina for lunch & a glass of wine. it's 80 degrees, sun shining, blue skies & truly just beautiful out. the riverside cafe is set along the river and when sitting outside on the deck you can hear the water rushing by. the sound is so powerful when mixed with birds chirping. i love it. feels like vacation.

for lunch we decide the quinoa salad sounds fantastic, 2 glasses of pinot grigio & the buffalo tacos were the way to go. we were right, it was delicious. people watching in basalt is a lot of fun. casual dressing, work out clothes & the classic shorts & t-shirts seem to be the dress of choice. so of course, dina (in a strapless romper, jackie o glasses & big sun hat) and i (jovovich hawk maxi dress with cut outs, souchi riley cardi) are over-dressed but we are happy and having a great time.

so we head over to the block party to check things out. rumor has it: there is a band, a beer garden, tons of food (all the restaurants put up booths & misc aspen valley cafes). here is what we've seen & thankfully we each had just one glass of wine or perhaps we would have been dancing!

the girls then called me that the store was busy so i headed back to the store till 7pm. a girl has to keep the customers happy. fyi, we had our best day in basalt so far (yeah souchi!) alison, from midland bakery stops by the store looking fabulous in a vintage turquoise maxi dress (yeah, not shorts!) and we head back to the block party once we close up shop. but, first i must go get jack! while walking home, i run into our souchi fave, suzanne with her dog rocco, on her amazing cruiser w/ custom leopard seat & basket. LOVE.

we head to tempranillo and meet up with karl & david & i've got jack who loves the lawn in front of the restaurant but has decided that he must dig up the big tree. karl, being a dog owner & avid, be the alpha, takes jack on short lead and jack is pretty chill eating tons of ice cubes. turns out everyone is hungry again so we head to the gyro stand (sold out). then the oyster stand (sold out but have clam chowder) & then decide to hit up midland bakery for dinner as it's now 8:45 and so loud we want some quiet.

more wine (i pass on this), more food, more laughs, more ridiculous conversation and joined by the fabulous jessie who works at midland. we laughed for a long time, discussed male vs female corporate marketing targets and teased each other to the point of silliness.

all in all a fantastic night.

i did it!!! yes, i finally made it up, over & around basalt mountain. it was so beautiful that i can't wait to do it again. maybe sunday before jacks puppy kindergarten class. did you know, i absolutely love basalt? so here are pictures of the incredible hike this past sunday in basalt mountain. i went with my new friend dina & it was funny (cue...twang....deliverance song), barbaric (limbs???) & survivor (is this a trail?). i had a great time. rumor has it it's about 8 miles and totally worth it.

basalt block party weekend.........june 11 & 12...................part 1

what a weekend. i am exhausted........feeling sluggish (yoga in a few hours hoping to revive me or send me to an early sleep time) i am trying out yoga.....i have taken maybe a dozen yoga classes in my life and was never really into it. however, i am so envious of the yoga bodies i see on my friends....arms, abs, ass....hmm so i have decided to give it a try in this beautiful environment. i love how i feel afterwards but am not a fan of the moaning, chanting..but hey, maybe i'll learn to enjoy it......or tune it out. i went twice last week & am going today to a different studio to see how that goes.

so saturday morning i went on another hike and didn't make the loop in basalt mtn as i wasn't sure there was a loop & thought it best not to wander on my own. so short hike, chai at midland (with soy as i still can't have dairy...8 more days), then off to play with jack in the park (fetch....he's pretty good!) and then to the store. as i walk up (ugh, 10 minutes late) i am feeling a good day & jack is happy, content and already sleepy. in walks, a women in tennis gear who heads straight to the tourmaline trina cardi cape. so pretty on her since she is blonde, tall & tan. she was in the day before in golf gear & melisa was showing her all the fabulous ways to wear it. so, dreams of souchi, tossing & turning in beautiful cashmere, made her have to come in saturday morning. she left happy & fearful of a possible new addiction :)

then, the cool & very funny krista walks in. i met krista last week at her home for the trunk show she was hosting for her friend who launched the line of cottons from india (pretty colors). so we talk, chat, & she tries on everything in the store. i like her style, love her attitude and we are having a great time. she leaves with 2 amazing gifts for friends & gifts for herself. she's headed to a bbq that night and needed the paula pocket pullover in snow white & tight white jeans to wear with chocolate lizard cowboy boots & layers of the most amazing turquoise squash blossom necklace from the 20's (swoon!!!). not to mention she has long legs, bright blue eyes...stunning. she needed some other things and had a great time choosing. so much fun.

then in walks, suzanne, our new souchi favorite. she is also very funny, realized her souchi addiction early on (that's the first step) and just had to say yes to the souchi drug! she got cool cool pieces: new jeans from 'mother' the crop looker in peacock (i think i need these), souchi caroline sweater in navy, the netty panel tank in chrome bamboo, the clinton head scarf in multi (love!) and the last christina lehr tent tee. seriously cute stuff and she looked fantastic.

so far, it's noon & i am having the best day with great customers. so i head out for an afternoon break from 2-5 so i can be back to work in the store if it's busy late night because of the block party.

basalt.......june 10......

ahhhhhh, i woke up this morning at 6:45....the air is so clean, sky so blue & sun so bright that it feels impossible to sleep in these days. however, i didn't have that problem last week when i was sleeping till 8:30. but, mostly that was because i was waking up at 2, 4, 6 to let jack out. he's much better now about holding his bladder (YEAHHHHHHHHH)

so, i woke up this morning, through on my trusty target leggings (love these & $5.99), christina lehr slip tank, enza costa l/s t-shirt & my straw fedora (no more sun spots!) and headed on a hike to the trail head off spur/midland. it's a great hike and hopefully tomorrow morning i will find out if it loops around. so far i've gone 45 minutes up and then back. i love the view & it's a great work out. tomorrow i'm heading out early in hopes that i find out if it loops around....stay tuned. here are some pictures from the hike.

then play date with jack & layla. i love layla's mom, logan. we are very similar about our 'kids' love them but man they can make us crazy. nothing is more fun than watching them play together. we just crack up and watch them. it is so sweet, hysterical & curious: how can that not hurt?

off to work to open at 10 am. super excited as we got new jeans from mother & a huge box of souchi bamboo & organic cotton & cotton/cashmere. you MUST come to the store to see all the color. so pretty & fun & playful. i had to steal a pair of the jeans, organic cami & a leslie bamboo crew. joy!

after checking in all the new things, changing our windows, re-merchandising the store, freaking out at jacks need to bark, bark, bark AND bark....(finally had to get the water!) i left the new souchi girls to the store and headed to midland bakery for a glass of wine, the couch under the tree & continued to read 'an extravagant hunger' while i waited for logan to finish work so layla & jack could play again. i am feeling the need to have a glass of wine at 4 pm everyday. such a relaxing luxury. i brought 12 books to read and haven't read one! i've got to get on with it.

it's now, internet time: looking at homes, cities, commercial spaces, and style.com. meanwhile, jack is headed to the crate (omg! he went on his own!!)

has anyone checked out the collections on style.com? what do you love? what did you hate? here's what i love....so far.

fyi, he's now out of his crate :) and i miss my living room :(

basalt......the first 5 days....................

arghhhhhhh, i just spent 65 minutes writing the blog post & saved it...yet somehow it wasn't saved! omg, i'm so annoyed. now, i'm beat and not in the mood to write it all over again. i just type/write when i do the blog so i have no notes.......arghhhh, i am very sorry as i spent a lot of time on it and now well....it will just be a re-cap.

here are pics of my run this week. i was trying to make it to the light at the base of two rivers road. rumor had it that it was 4.1 miles, someone else said 3.2 so i wanted to try. i made it (3rd attempt) and decided to keep going and follow 82 to where it loops around to the bridge, post office and library. i did it!! but, turns out it is actually only 4.6 miles. still proud, but determined to start running 15-20 miles a week. my nutritionist has also given me the goal to be able to hike aspen mountain before the end of summer. i am a little scared of this but hey, i do like challenges.

this morning i went on a hike to red hill mountain in carbondale. it is such a great hike as it's a pretty steady incline. but the view is well worth it. i was awestruck by the bark, bright wild flowers and the red rocks. i thought the view of carbondale was so pretty but lisa, my hiking partner, and nutritionist said the sky was still so hazy form the fires in southern colorado. still, what do you think? i'm thinking pretty.

basalt......dinner, nutrition, hikes, jack & new friends & nails........a good may

so i have been in basalt for 16 days & so far, i think it may be one of my best decisions in a long time. here is what i'm loving:
it is so pretty
the people are incredibly friendly. next to disneyland this may be the happiest place on earth
dogs are the treasure of the town (especially if you are a puppy....a lab is double points)
the skies are always blue (well mostly, when there isn't rain, hail & snow)
the night sky is covered in stars
and they seem to like souchi!

this weekend was so much fun. i met even more people and had a great time with customers. jack is taking to his crate....of course i had to decorate it with a clementine/cancun stripe cashmere blanket (i have issues).
his love is still strong for layla layla layla.

i started a new exercise routine (yoga, lean & mean class, running & hiking) and am now making 3 meals a day (except when out with new friends). i must say, running in high altitude is so much harder but the fresh air and incredible beauty around you makes you forget you're panting! today, i attempted a 4 mile run but only made it 2.5. the good news: i saw a snow covered mountain peak as i ran along a river. the sounds were fantastic.

last night i went to a dinner party and met great people & a 6yr old lab named cody (so cute & 100lbs!) damon grilled bratwurst & rib eyes, corn, onions & veggies. it was delicious (and i had already had dinner!) and more incredible is it was outdoors under a black night with big bright twinkle stars. so fun.

today started with a run, then play date w/ layla, followed by busy day at the store with some of the girls from dinner party stopping by and from salon tulio next door. then another 40 min of playing with layla. i then spent some time catching up with a dear friend, mina, discussing a future trip to rio & argentina.

it was time for jack to go out again, so once again, in pjs bottoms, clehr tank top & souchi cardi i head outside. on our way back (just 5 minutes) we see an adorable family who want to play with jack so we talked, played with jack & turns out this womans friend is my new nutritionist. so i sit down in pj bottoms at the table next to them and have a glass of wine with the girls at midland.

now it's bedtime for both of us...we're exhausted!

basalt.............may 28 & 29

yesterday and today blew by...truly! it was so windy tonight: signs, planters, trash cans, etc were turned over, my decks covered in tiny branches and flower petals (pretty but man i can't stop sneezing).

jack was quite sad and moody yesterday. we had a rough day & weren't very good friends. i was starting to think he was sick since he was so mopey. i was getting frustrated as everyone who came in, walked by, etc had plenty of advice on what to do. which most days i find helpful but yesterday i was annoyed. especially as it was: you need better toys, oh doesn't he have anything to chew, doesn't he go outside, oh 'no no no, don't bark', etc when i kept saying, he has 5 toys here, has eaten 2 chew toys and he goes out 10 minutes every hour and usually more. arghhhhh

i was busy at the store selling batwings, tricia headscarfs, tanks & butik necklaces. i got a visit from the fashion photographer and got invited to drinks with a group from basalt at 6:30. i headed home and got a message from logan, laila's mom, saying 'we're headed to the park can you and jack meet us?' YES!! as soon as i said, jack, do you want to play with laila, he jumped up and we were out the door in 5 minutes. we have to pass the store logan works at in order to go to the park, and jack headed straight to the store (which was closed) and scratched and scratched the door whimpering. i said, 'no she's at the park'. he just laid down and dug in. he would not budge. so i had to pick him up and carry him half a block before he gave up and started to walk. as soon as we crossed to the park, he must have seen or smelled her because he started pulling like crazy. then we hear, 'look laila it's jack!'. omg! they ran towards each other and were kissing on the mouth and then proceeded to play for 45 minutes! it was so much fun. i realized jack was mopey, he missed laila. sadly they are in a soccer tournament this weekend so we don't get to see her and jack is mopey. poor jack is smitten.

at 6:30 i walk over to temparnillo to meet some new friends. 3 hours later: 2 1/2 glasses of wine & rigatoni with meat sauce & some shaved manchego on top. yum! delicious. we started inside & then decided to sit out on the lawn on the outdoor furniture as the sun went down. then it was back inside for dinner. a great night.

today, was a day of writing orders for both the portland & basalt stores, choosing new spring 2012 colors & snacking way too much. again, jack was mopey and missing laila. so each time we went out for potty breaks we had to scrach on laila's door.

it's love.

basalt..................may 26 & 27

what great last few days jack and i have had. on thursday, we had a really funny day. mostly, because we had our first puppy training on wednesday night & i learned that training would be the best option for sweet jack. however, i was happy about that because the trainer said it doesn't have to be forever. but to train him to be comfortable that when he does sleep there he won't be sad but would want too.

however, he was so amazing wednesday night that i was second guessing my child would need to be crated. ha!! we then went to work thursday and he had a love fest with his girl laila. still acting as a perfect child & i figured his first vet appointment was that night and i'd ask the vet if he needed training.

in fact, word has spread through eagle county (slight exaggeration...very slight) that there is a beautiful puppy at the new store in basalt. what? you don't believe me? well, the pretty & fabulous, erin, from plum tv stopped by the store to meet jack. yes, she did! lucky for me, she actually liked some souchi and walked out with our awesome organic cotton tiny cami in banana. so cute on her! however, this was after multiple photos of jack.

we were then visited by logan, chase & their gorgeous baby australian shepherd, laila. who i kid you not is jacks true & first love. it is incredibly sweet how they know each others names. jacks scratches at the door where logan works after hours & tends to whimpers. it's love.

then we were visited by the amazing, frankie (a new customer i absolutely love!) and her friend judy. frankie brought her blonde labradoodle, barry, who decided he should sleep in jacks tiny mesh travel bag, lay on his blanket and eat his treats. ahhh, so cute, since he's about 80lbs & didn't really fit. but poor jack wanted his treats and tried to get them but barry is faster, bigger & did that doggy snap that sent jack scooting across the floor. as usual, all was well in the puppy world at souchi.

so we head to aspen early, so i can meet a new friend, amy, who is opening a new store in aspen. we go to ute bar & restaurant. a yummy reisling, goat cheese & arugula, and hummus & pita. the sun was out and it was pretty, not cold but warm with the sun on you. we sat outside & low and behold, 'hey suzi' we ran into erin from plum tv. it is strange to be here for 10 days and already making friends and running into people. it feels great. jack slept in the car & was completely out when i came back an hour later. he is so so so good!

we're off to meet caroline, jack's vet at the aspen animal hospital who uses a holistic approach & western medicine. jack made friends, was fantastic, didn't even flinch at his vaccine & besides being super chatty and loud he was incredible. he is 'looking great': long, lean & great coat. yeah, us!

oh, and yes, she said a crate :(

so friday am, i went to buy 2 crates (1 for store & 1 for home), 2 beds, 2 exact toys (retrieve game) and tons of chew toys that will stay locked in his crate for only him :) i set the one up at store and within 3 minutes jack was asleep inside! yes, he loves it. he only whimpered once, and that was because he was inside crate & there was a dog in the store. so far so good.

we stop by to see laila again & go for another walk and then dinner in the home crate. no problem. eating a treat in the crate. no problem. at bedtime i let jack fall asleep on the lil couch (is it? it's tiny!) and then we he was out i put him inside crate AND woke up at 6 this morning. pure perfection!!!!

yeah jack! yeah mom!

today was another beautiful day in colorado. bright blue skies, white clouds and no rain (yeah!) todays outfit: genetic james jeans and the blaire v-neck in multi with my tried and true rag & bone booties. such a pretty day. also, cool customers who purchased some sonia rykiel, souchi, thea grant and more souchi....in spite of jack peeing in the middle of the store! oh jack.

jack has been pretty good. i'm thinking 95% angel 5% devil. but the devil part is really devilish!! so today was his first day of puppy training. we met for a private consultation with laura at the canine consultant. and she was fantastic. so far i have put our meeting into practice and what a great night.

laura has a beautiful ranch in missouri heights. it is absolutely gorgeous surroundings. the view, the land, the ranches. i was blown away so i had to pull over and take these photos. gorgeous! smart lady, chose this place in the 70's. brilliant!
